Long inspections seek to prevent trafficking.
Truck drivers from Mexico have begun blockading bridges along the U.S. Mexico border to protest an order made by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The Texas governor recently ordered officials to conduct lengthy safety inspections on every vehicle crossing the border to prevent the smuggling of people and contraband. Mexican truck drivers can wait up to ten hours to cross the border and deliver Mexican goods to the country, and truckers are paid by the mile, not by time.
“I get paid the same whether it takes me an hour or ten hours to cross, so this is affecting us a lot,” Raymundo Galicia said, one of the protesting Mexican drivers. U.S. Customs and Border Protection have also decried the order, calling the inspections “additional and unnecessary” measures negatively impacting “an already-strained supply chain.”
